The FIA just held their Prize Giving Ceremony over the weekend, and spoiler alert: Max Verstappen was the man of the hour. Usually championship banquets aren’t too interesting (especially when the champion won 19 of the 21 races) however this night was a little different due to the growing tension between F1 and the FIA. Did you know that the Indianapolis 500 was once part of Formula 1’s calendar? From 1950 to 1960, the iconic race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway tried uniting American and European racing fans alike. 🌐 Despite initial optimism, the Indy 500 didn’t mesh seamlessly with F1. “There just wasn’t a lot of similarity between the two series,” says Elizabeth Blackstock. 🤷‍♂️

During this era, only a handful of F1 drivers, like Alberto Ascari and Juan Manuel Fangio, ventured into Indy territory with mixed results. However, after FIA dropped Indy from F1, the narrative shifted. In 1963, Colin Chapman’s Team Lotus revolutionized the race with a smaller, mid-engined car, setting the stage for Graham Hill’s Indy 500 triumph in 1966. 🏎️

The F1/Indy crossover era left us with quirky stats and a lasting impact on both series, marking a unique chapter in motorsport history. 🏆
