Honda’s Bold Proposal
Honda Motorsports Manager Chuck Schifsky proposes a radical shift for IndyCar, suggesting a move away from the traditional 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 formula. 🔀 Citing the global auto industry’s move toward hybridization and electrification, 🔋 Schifsky recommends a cost-saving measure: making the internal combustion engine (ICE) a spec engine, supplied solely by Ilmor Engineering. This proposal, despite Honda’s historic rivalry with Ilmor, emphasizes the changing landscape of motorsports.
Schifsky notes, “You could save money…take a page out of the development of the hybrid system…everybody runs the same engine. Ilmor could build it.” Honda’s willingness to abandon its own engine program in favor of a spec motor from a rival signals a significant shift in priorities.
Honda thinks this could be a potential solution for IndyCar’s perennial struggle to attract more manufacturers, suggesting a spec ICE could lower costs and entice new players. 💰 However, the bold proposal raises questions about the future of IndyCar’s traditional independent manufacturer engine battles. Is it time for IndyCar to embrace a unified engine era? 🤔
