Trending Up 📈

Sergio Perez – Checo won his second race of the year in Baku tying his teammate for wins this season. Perez is proving that Verstappen doesn’t have the championship locked down just yet.

Bubba Wallace – Wallace is the defending winner at Kansas Speedway with 23XII sweeping both races in Kansas in 2022. Look for Wallace to defend his status and score his first win of the year this weekend.

Trending Down 📉

Lance Stroll – After the spring break, Aston Martin struggled to maintain their number two status behind Red Bull. Stroll finished in P7 after Ferrari looked like they returned to their proper form and filled out the Top 5.

Joey Logano – Logano finished P31 at the rain delayed race in Dover. This was the fourth time the no. 22 has finished outside of the Top 30 this year. Logano has been trending downwards over the past four weeks excluding a solid run at Martinsville.

Legacy Motor Club Changes Up

Legacy Motor Club (LMC) will switch its NASCAR manufacturer alliances from Chevrolet to Toyota after the 2023 season. The move will create eight full-time Toyota teams on the Cup Series grid in 2024, the most since the 2011 season. LMC’s principal owner Maury Gallagher said the change in manufacturer would help the organization develop into a “standalone” team that can compete regularly for wins and championships.

With its new relationship with Toyota, LMC will receive the same engines as the Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI teams and receive data directly from Toyota Racing Development. The move is the next step in becoming one of the top-tier organizations in the NASCAR Cup Series.

RFK Right on Track

Brad Keselowski, the former NASCAR Cup Series champion, is currently ranked ninth going into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway. His No. 6 RKF Racing team has five top-10 finishes through 11 races, which includes the last two weekends at Talladega Superspeedway and Dover Motor Speedway. While he believes they are currently in the fifth to tenth category regularly, Keselowski aims to grow his team to be a legit contender week in and week out. He points to last fall as the turning point where they added more key pieces, including people and resources, to the company, and now he seems more settled in handling both the co-owner and driver roles.

“We’ve gone from where we kind of were last year, which I would have called the ‘irrelevant’ category, to the ‘relevant’ category – whether people see that or not. I want to get into the category where we’re a weekly contender, and we’re right on the fringe of that.”

Faux Ferrari Rumors

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has dismissed rumors linking Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with a move to Mercedes and said that the team is “100% committed to putting pen to paper with Lewis” Hamilton. Leclerc, who finished third in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, responded by saying he was “fully committed” to Ferrari. Wolff also said that while Leclerc is a “super guy” and someone “you need to always have on your radar,” he is not someone the team is considering in the short- or medium-term.

Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the year, but Wolff said the team was still committed to giving the seven-time champion a championship-winning car and keeping him at the team beyond this season.

Sustainable Seb

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel will return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, driving classic F1 cars running on e-fuels. The cars are part of Vettel’s personal collection, and include an ex-Nigel Mansell 1992 Williams FW14B and an ex-Ayrton Senna 1993 McLaren MP4/8. Approximately 20% of the vehicles at the festival will run on alternative fuels, and the Goodwood Revival in September will host the first-ever motor race powered entirely by synthetic fuel. Porsche has already invested $100m in synthetic fuel technology, and F1 is set to run on e-fuels from 2026.

IndyCar

Silly Season has Started

The NTT IndyCar Series grid could expand to 28 or 29 cars by 2024, according to reports, with talk of new teams and additional entries being created. Several free-agent drivers are waiting to sign contracts with existing or potential teams, with Andretti Autosport’s Romain Grosjean among them. Chip Ganassi Racing is facing uncertainty, with only Scott Dixon under a long-term contract, and Marcus Ericsson’s contract expiring this year. Meanwhile, the Meyer Shank Racing team is set to undergo a possible 100% changeover in drivers, with rumors of Tom Blomqvist being signed for one of the IndyCar seats in 2024.
